California Travel: Museums: The Getty Villa
One beautiful Sunday afternoon, I decided to go to the Getty Villa in Malibu, CA. I live about 40 minutes away from this amazing museum and I have driven past it countless times. Now that I’ve discovered its beauty I’d like to share it with you.
The J. Paul Getty Museum is located right off the 1 Highway or PCH in Malibu, California.
- For directions/hours/parking click here
You can order your tickets online. Admission is free. Parking is $15.
- Plan on being there for 3(+) hours. If its your first time I suggest more time.
- Print tickets ahead of time.
- Arrive in the morning hours (less people)
The museum offers many exhibits from Roman/Greek times, as well as other special exhibitions.
- For a map of the museum and list of exhibitions click here.
The museum has a Cafe and Coffee Kiosk. There is also a picnic area as well. (We ate at the Cafe and the food was really good.) They also offer a meal and tour of the herb garden with “Tea by the Sea”. The tea served, is made from herbs grown in the garden.
- For Cafe and “Tea by the Sea” menu click here.
The pool of the Outer Peristyle(Courtyard) was the best part of this museum. All the architecture was beautiful. You can take a self guided tour or rent an iPod for free that has an audio tour.
I also suggest watching the short film about the Getty Villa before you wonder around. It is just to the right of the main museum entrance and it plays every 15 minutes.

You’ll have some great photo ops and spectacular views of the ocean. If you live in Southern California or are going to visit, I suggest you spend a little time here at the Getty Villa.
When you’re in Malibu, you’re never far from something amazing…pristine beaches, world-class shopping, indulgent dining and rich culture. One of Malibu’s best-loved cultural gems and one of our favorite places to spend the day is the Getty Villa.
The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria. Exhibits include Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities such as Gods and Goddesses and the Stories of the Trojan War, as well as Roman-inspired architecture and gardens.
The Getty Villa is just a short drive from Malibu Beach Inn, and is located at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway.
Admission to the Getty Villa is free. You can purchase your tickets at http://www.getty.edu/visit/.
